From: Josh Question: What exactly is Shangrila? Answer:
Shangri-La is the name of a mythical place in James Hilton's 1936 novel Lost Horizon. In general language, it has come to mean an earthly paradise or utopia -- generally secluded and peaceful. Hilton's Shagri-La is a warm green valley in the frozen Himalayas, where four airplane crash survivors are taken after being rescued. Lost Horizon was the first paperback book ever published in 1939. Frank Capra put it on the big screen in 1937. In 1973, Charles Jarrott directed a remake of the movie -- this time a musical. It has seen numerous theatrical performances since that time. |
