Letters to Oblivion

English teachers don't really teach english. They teach us the values and beliefs of authors who are popular by chance. Luckily for them, the authors beliefs are so close to ours that nobody has caught on yet. One teacher is crossing the line of obscurity by teaching through poetry and using his own for examples. He is demented and a danger to those to can't tell the difference between fact and opinion.

I must congratulate your teacher on one thing, they have a lot of courage. To be teaching your own work to public school children is a pretty brave thing to do. Any minute, a student (like you) or administrator could realize what the teacher is doing and get them in some trouble. At least we at Oblivion now have a scapegoat. Our irresponsibility can be directly linked to the morals implemented into our heads by our irresponsible teachers. Before everyone starts protesting their English class, we would like to point out that everything you see in Oblivion is affected by someone's opinion. Just because someone says a "security guy" should be fired, doesn't mean they should. You must examine everything. Don't be led by the "garbage" that is printed within these pages. We wanted to say that so the Administration would get the idea that we are trying to brainwash our able-minded peers out of their heads.

Most of what you talk about doesn't have a lot of context to me (since I don't go to your school, or even live in the same hemisphere) but what I dug is the fact that you have discovered the power that goes with saying whatever you want to say, even though some people don't want you to say it.

I understand that you ended up having the hardcopy version banned, which means you must be doing something right, especially since none of the articles I read seem offensive or irresponsible. It's not necessarily what you say that is dangerous to people who try to control you, it's the fact that you have the courage to say anything at all without asking for permission.

Like that guy (Tim Hurley), it seems like he was punished not for doing something which is 'wrong' or 'forbidden,' but for doing something which is permissible but with a bad attitude. It's not his actions which was punished it was his thoughts. So if you are gonna be busted for what you think anyway, what's the point in following the rules?

G'day mate! It's great to get mail from around the globe. No matter what you say, someone will say you have a bad attitude and become offended. Why try and cater to everyone? An "authority figure" asked one of us, "didn't you think you would offend people with this?" Sure some people may get offended, but it's inevitable that you will step on someone's foot while on a journey. Besides, there are so many things out there that are "offensive," we didn't think anyone would notice.

I just got a chance to check out Oblivion. I like it--a lot! Football oppression, standing up for your rights & flag burning--are you sure they actually let you distribute those issues?? Wow! Sounds like the Olympus is an unworthy competitor, sure you wouldn't like to take on at least The Olympian? Not much more intelligent, but they have more resources and might provide a bit of a challenge. Seriously--my compliments to you & the rest of the Oblivion crew. It's one of the most intelligent publications (well, pages, for me) I've seen in a long time.

Thanks for your extremely uplifting letter! Although we are not 'taking on' anyone, we would like to have the resources The Olympian has. But alas, we are poor. At least we put together the money to print this issue!
