There is a startling use of school money going on in Olympia High School and that is the amount of money that we spend on football. Ever since the 90's started there has been a net average of $7698.31 on football while the next closest school sport's net average is track with $2162.79. Why is this you ask? Well, I can think of many reasons here's a few.
The first and most obvious is the fact that football is favored far more by the school and general public than any other school sport. You can tell this is very apparent in the fact that before all the home games there are pep rallies, and no other school sport has assemblies for the purpose of pep rallies. Another great example of this is the attendance of the football games. There are far more people attending football games than attend any other sport.
So what makes football so special? Why is it that we pay so much of the school's money on a sport that has twenty-two men on the field trying to knock each other to the ground while holding an oblong ball? The answer is possibly in the general public's yearning for violence. All the other school sports are not violent enough so we don't give them the attention that we give football.
What is the school's and the football team's excuse for all this spending? Their excuse is that they spend a lot more money on equipment than any other school team. So what is their equipment? A few new water bottles, a new football, and a banquet at the end of the year. They say they need to buy new pads, and they use this excuse every year. Well the way it should be is to cut their budget. The pads are made to last a couple of years so why do they keep spending our money. Who knows? All I know is the top sports budgets behind football are minuscule compared with that of football.
So what do you do if you want this to change? It's simple you bitch to student government. Tell them what you think and maybe they will see that they are fucking morons, and will change the budget for next year.
